TINA'S TRIP TO SUCCESS
The Academy was the beginning of a lifelong dream for Tina. At school Tina enjoyed creative subjects like woodwork and ceramic, so after Year 12, Tina tried to become a hairdresser.
TOO OLD FOR APPRENTICESHIP
“Salon owners kept telling me I was too old, at 18 to be an apprentice. I gave up and worked for McDonalds for 3 years,” said Tina. “Then I heard about The Academy where I could become qualified without doing an apprenticeship, and decided to join.”
LIVING IN MELBOURNE
“Mum and Dad helped me move and find a place to live in Melbourne. With my “living Away From Home Youth Allowance” and “Rent Assistance,” I settled in by myself and started the course.”
6 DAYS A WEEK & 1 NIGHT
“For the first three months I had a busy schedule of training for 40 hours a week,” explained Tina.
MADE LONG LASTING FRIENDSHIPS
“After 3 months, I stopped my Saturday training. I’d made a lot of friends at The Academy so was out most weekends.”
BONUS BEAUTY COURSE
“Because my fees for the whole course were paid in advance, the Beauty Course was free,” smiled Tina. “I can do acrylic and gel nails, waxing, makeup and eyelash and eyebrow tinting too.”
QUALIFIED IN 7 MONTHS
“With the help of my fabulous instructor and the great experience with clients right through the course, I passed everything and flew home with my Certificates in 7 months."
“I had no trouble finding work and even managed a few salons before I eventually bought one of them "
LOVED LIVING IN MELBOURNE
“ I could have finished earlier if I’d kept training Saturdays, but I wanted to stay in Melbourne as long as I could, because I loved living there.”
OWN SALON AT 21
“I love having my own salon,” smiled Tina, “I can set the standard and although it is hard work, I have just employed an apprentice. I also employ a Beauty Therapist part time,” explained Tina. “I do the beauty as well when she has days off.”
GOAL TO HAVE MORE SALONS
“I’ve been getting lots of compliments from clients who love the funky and fashionable styles and techniques I’ve learnt at The Academy,” said Tina. “My goal is to open more salons in the future and to enter competitions.”
ADVICE FOR OTHER “WANNA BE HAIRDRESSERS’
“Don’t let distance frighten you and you’ll make lots of friends at The Academy, everyone’s really friendly. I had no problems finding employment when I went home because The Academy’s standard is very high and you’ll end up being a really good ‘all round’ hairdresser."
“I’d recommend any one who’s not afraid of hard work, to go for it! As my instructor said “Keep aiming high, and I do."
