Up Up and Away
When Kent Young, from Ontario, Canada, decided he wanted a change in his career in sales to become a hairdresser, he asked his hairdresser friend in Melbourne, Australia, where would be the best place to train.
His friend chose the Australian Academy of Hairdressing because he knew a few hairdressers who had trained here, and they were great hairdressers. He also chose it because of its location, being so close to trams and trains.
"I had been to Melbourne on a Tourist Visa a few years ago and so I began to make arrangements to apply for a Student Visa", said Kent.
"When I rang the Academy, Lisa, the Academy's Co-ordinator for overseas students advised me about the course fees, starting dates and the best health insurance for me. She also sent me all the enrolment papers and contracts for me to sign. I didn't need to go to an agent in Canada, it was great just enrolling through Lisa ".
I had to change my starting date a couple of times to suit me. I found the Academy very flexible", said Kent. "Calling Lisa was always easy as she would call me right back so as not to incur long distances charges. By the time I arrived in Australia, I'd spoken with Lisa a number of times. We'd also sent each other a few emails, so I felt I already knew someone at the Academy when I arrived. It was great to meet her and I found that the teachers and students are just as friendly", smiled Kent.
"The course is terrific, I'm working with clients and in the next couple of months will be cutting hair," explained Kent. "I should be finished within 2 years."
"Lisa helped me apply for a Work Permit once I started the course and I'm working with my friend in a Surry Hills salon on Saturdays", said Kent.
