> THANKS AUSTRALIA Gaylene had been a "frustrated" hairdresser since the age of 16 when she was unable to find an apprenticeship in her birthplace, New Zealand. MOTHER OF FIVE A secretary for years, Gaylene married, and 5 children later decided that she'd go to Melbourne to qualify as the hairdresser she still wanted to be. FULL TIME COURSE Gaylene attended Monday to Friday with Wednesdays off and qualified in 13 months. "I didn't feel pushed, I had plenty of time to complete the training. Because I was travelling for 3 hours a day, I did most of the book work on the train, leaving lots of time at The Academy to do the practical work in the salons," said Gaylene. MIXED AGE GROUP "The fact that I was in my early 50's and the teachers were younger, was not a problem. We worked at our own pace and the class was a mix of young and older students and we all got along extremely well." INDEPENDENT LEARNING "I loved the independent learning, using modules and videos to learn the techniques on mannequin heads and then once the work was done well on the heads, we practised on the salon clients." ACADEMY SALON "Practising in the salon every day was exciting and the only subject that really made me stop and think was colouring. Because I hadn't studied for years, the teacher gave me a lot of help to decipher the colour module," said Gaylene." ASSESSMENTS "We had practical assessments all through the course and it was quite easy to find models from the public who came to The Academy's salons. My son was my model for the Men's Assessment at the end. It was great fun!" OWN SALON Gaylene's daughter-in-law qualified as a hairdresser in Omaha USA and she and Gaylene have bought a salon in the country offering the most up to date hairdressing available.
